And I'm wondering, why are these stories being written and produced primarily by millennials? You mentioned this earlier, about, like, this cultural shift primarily, like, driven by younger audiences. PARKER: Coming up - why stories about family relationships and trauma are coming from millennials. But, yes, the fantasy is fundamentally that an apology can make everything OK. And I'm not going to spoil it, but one thing I love about the ending of this movie, which is very open to interpretation, is that it leaves you with the space to sort of say, OK, where do they go now? Like, how do they move past the fact that they both understand everything they're capable of? And I think that that is a really smart exploration of this idea. ![]() But also, the apology is sort of - you know, if you are a child, that your parent can apologize to you and make it all better. We know there are things a parent can do that are so abusive and so horrible that the child is right to cut them out of their life. So I think what the film is smart about is it's smart about - A, the fantasy of any given sin can be covered up by an apology, when we know that's not true. ST JAMES: Now, it is a thing that can be repaired, and it needs to start with an apology, but that can't be where it stops. MICHELLE YEOH: (As Evelyn Wang) You are getting fat, and you never call me even though we have a family plan. ![]() (SOUNDBITE OF FILM, "EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE") ST JAMES: So the movie is about this woman named Evelyn, and she has a daughter named Joy, who's gay and has a girlfriend and constantly feels like her mother is just too hard on her. And I think where "Everything Everywhere All At Once" really gets into the problems with that fantasy is in its depiction of the ways that the many - and here I'm going to have to get into the plot of the movie. ST JAMES: I think what makes it a fantasy is the idea that, when the parent apologizes, it fixes 90% of what's wrong. PARKER: What makes it a fantasy when so much of it reflects many of our everyday experiences and emotions? But I think that that fantasy - as all fantasies - has a different set of blinders on that we sort of need to account for. But now I think we are skewing in the opposite direction, and I think that that is a necessary overcorrection. And then the kid's like, thank you for buying me a Pound Puppy when I was 4. And then the parent's like, oh, I'm sorry. And then, like, there's, like, a nod toward, well, maybe the parent wasn't always great. And I think that we have had movies that are literally the parent waiting to say thank you. But, like, I guess that old adage - what was it? - like, kids are waiting to hear I'm sorry, and parents are waiting to hear thank you. ST JAMES: There are so many children who need apologies from their parents, and it's not just those of us born between the years of 19. PARKER: Emily and I talk about the shift in perspective in the way families are portrayed, how it came to be, what its limits are and how it could bring about new kinds of stories about family and trauma. It's interested in questions of how does bad parenting - how does that intersect with the immigrant experience? How does that intersect with race? How does that intersect with queerness? - and then also an interest in intergenerational trauma. ![]() ST JAMES: One of the things I think marks it as a subgenre is it's very interested in questions of intersectionality. These stories are helmed mostly by millennials of color.ĮMILY ST JAMES: And core to the idea of them is a bad parent who apologizes eventually, and that apology kind of fixes everything. Marvel." So if I don’t have clean hands, if I don’t have a pure heart, if I do long for what will never satisfy, and if I do mislead others with my speech – where does that leave me? Can I climb God’s holy hill? Is there any chance I can stand to worship Him in the assembly of the righteous? Do I mislead others with my speech? Do I want others to think more highly of me than I deserve? Do I twist facts and accomplishments so that I look good? Is my yes always yes, and my no always no (James 5:12)? Once again: Guilty.Do I lift up my soul to what is false – that is, do I long for what will never satisfy? That may be longing for the promise of power from a literal false god, a carved idol, but it also includes the longing for any goal in my life other than knowing God.Do I have a pure heart? Jesus echoes this psalm in saying the pure in heart will have the blessing of seeing God (Matthew 5:8).Do I have clean hands? Water does not suffice to clean them, as Pilate found out (Matthew 27:24).Thus, they can indeed stand in His presence, in the assembly of the righteous. Therefore, to them He will become a God of salvation, not a God of wrath. Such people desire above all else to see the fulfillment of the High Priestly blessing in Numbers 6:25-27, by which God’s Name is put on His people: “The LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.” Such seekers, identified with God, subsumed under His Name, will receive God’s blessing: His own righteousness (verse 5). Verse 6 provides the hope that verse 4 seems to preclude: Those who seek His face, who desire to know Him, are among the generation of those who receive the blessing of worshiping Him. Only the righteous, those with clean hands and pure hearts, can stand.īut consider verse 4: How clean must my hands be? How pure must my heart be? If my heart is “deceitful above all things, and desperately sick” (Jeremiah 17:9), what hope is there for me to stand before God? How could I be clean enough to worship Him? Psalm 1:5 tells us that “the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.” No, the wicked could never stand in the presence of a holy God – they can only fall on their faces before Him, and be overwhelmed by His righteous wrath. So the question is: Can I stand in God’s presence? Am I qualified to worship and praise Him? The temple is a picture of God’s presence with His people. 6 Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob.Ĭan I ascend the hill of the Lord?
